چکیده

The purpose of this thesis is to examine what motivates nonindustrial private forest landowners to accept bids of various levels for harvesting. Through the use of a survey we specifically consider what preferences and landowner characteristics effect these decisions. Landowners were randomly selected from counties in Southwest Virginia. The participants were presented a payment table in which they were asked to indicate the level of certainty with which they would accept bids of various levels for their timber. The information obtained for the survey was used in a LOGIT model to examine which variables were most important both in determining the certainty respondents attached to different bid levels, and the likelihood of accepting a bid of any size. Our most important results show that factors such as bequest motives, tract size, absentee status, and environmental preferences influence the bid acceptance decision for landowners in the sample.

Bequest Intentions of Forest Landowners: Theory and Empirical Evidence*

This paper studies in an overlapping generations forest economy the conditions under which money and/or timber bequests occur across generations, assuming the usual case of one-sided altruism. We assume nonindustrial landowners have preferences for consumption and for amenities from unharvested forest stock. Within this framework, we examine conditions under which landowners choose to leave tim...

Social availability of residual woody biomass from nonindustrial private woodland owners in Minnesota and Wisconsin

An important and potentially underused source of biomass that could be utilized in energy production is from nonindustrial private woodlands. We employ the Theory of Planned Behavior to estimate the social availability of woody biomass as a function of landowner behavior intent, landowner characteristics, forest land characteristics, and biomass price on stated willingness to harvest biomass in...

How Timber Harvesting and Biodiversity are Managed in Uneven-Aged Forests: A Cluster-Sample Econometric Approach

Nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners have been shown to be more multi-objective by nature than industrial landowners: they give more importance to standing timber and forestland for the amenity values they provide (Newman & Wear, 1993). Among analyses of forest landowner behaviour, the household production framework recognises the benefits associated with forest amenities, as first ap...

Forest owner incentives to protect riparian habitat

Private landowners increasingly are asked to cooperate with landscape-level management to protect or enhance ecological resources. We examine the willingness of nonindustrial private forest owners in the Pacific Northwest (USA) to forego harvesting within riparian areas to improve riparian habitat. An empirical model is developed describing owners’ willingness to accept an economic incentive to...

The Role of Assistance Foresters in Nonindustrial Private Forest Management: Alabama Landowners' Perspectives

Nonindustrial private forest landowners in Alabama were surveyed and assistance foresters' involvement in their management activities documented. Overall, assistance foresters have participated in some 58% of all forest management activities. Consulting foresters account for 45 to 50% of those activities involving assistance foresters. Public foresters have more small and low income landowners ...
